ANTIQUE FURNITURE CARE Use caution when considering a course of treatment or repair to your antique furniture. If you feel you possess a piece with significant historical value, it is best to consult a licensed appraiser or conservator before any repairs or restoration to your antique. The appearance of antique furniture can certainly be enhanced without damaging the existing finish. Again consult a restoration expert before treating, maintaining the original aged finish is the primary consideration. If you begin stripping and refinishing, it will remove the original finished coating and possibly damage the patina as well.
GENERAL CARE
- Avoid placing antique furniture in direct sunlight.
- Avoid placing antiques near heat or air cooling vents.
- Do not place antiques near fireplaces or stoves.
- Always remove spills immediately.
- Dust regularly using a dust free cloth.
Transporting Your Antiques
- Be sure to check for loose or damaged joinery.
- Carry chairs by the seat rails.
- Tables should be carried by the apron or legs to ensure the top does not pull loose from the base.
- Always lift heavier pieces, do not drag them across the floor.
- When transporting remove shelves, drawers and doors.
- Protect all glass areas with adequate padding.
- Large pieces should be placed and their back when being transported.
- Marble tops can crack very easily, be sure to lay them flat while transporting.
- Glass and mirrors can be stored and transported vertically.
