CARING FOR YOUR SILVER
Contrary to popular opinion, silver doesn't tarnish especially rapidly unless it's kept in a damp atmosphere. When using a polish, a toothbrush will come in handy to remove polish from nooks and crannies. Do not over polish, or you may erase decoration and eventually wear the metal thin. You can also wash silver by hand in warm soapy water. I wouldn't suggest you not put your silver in the dishwasher as the abrasive powders dull the surface. Silver gilt doesn't need cleaning with polish; an occasional wash with soapy water will suffice.
REMOVING COFFEE AND TEA STAINS FROM SILVER
If used regularly, silver tea pots and coffee pots will tend to become stained on the inside.
To remove this type of staining try the following:
- Mix 1 teaspoon of borax with 2 1/2 cups of hot water.
- Fill the pot with the solution, and let it stand for a couple of hours.
- Use a soft bristled artist’s brush to swirl
to solution around the pot.
- Pour the solution out and wash out with warm soapy water.
- Rinse the pot with clean, warm water, and dry thoroughly with a piece of soft towel.
