CARING FOR YOUR BISQUE ANTIQUE DOLL TYPES
When cleaning the face of a bisque doll use a cotton swab and warm soapy water and gently clean away dirt, followed by a gentle patting with a clean damp cloth. Carefully brush the wig with a small soft brush and be especially careful with mohair as it can be extremely brittle. If the pate (the pate is the cap that hides the hole in the doll's head), has become detached use the original glue (wood glue or animal glue) to set or attach. Use a powerful light to check for cracks or restoration, this is why you use a glue that is not non reversible, so it would be possible to remove the pate in the future.
Wash the clothes by hand. Materials such as silk, cotton or satin can be delicate and tend to split over time. Repairing clothes can be difficult so vulnerable areas should be attended to as soon as possible.
When Displaying the doll be sure it is secure, a cabinet or doll stands are excellent. These can be purchased at doll fairs or through advertisements in doll magazines. Doll sized chairs or buggy’s and even highchairs are safe and an attractive display. Be sure if you decide to store your doll to use acid free tissue paper and use bubble wrap to protect the head. To avoid any strain on the plaster be sure to place it face down holding the eyes in place in a cardboard box. Remember to check on it from time to time to ensure there are no signs of moths or mold.
Again, the head is fragile and the most valuable part of the doll. If it is in good condition the doll will maintain significant value.
