GENERAL JEWELLERY CARE Cleaning your jewellery can cause serious problems if inappropriate materials are used on a sensitive item and may severely damage items and reduce their value. Start with a soft cloth or try gentle, simple brushing with a soft, clean, small paintbrush. Precious stones can become dirty and a slightly more aggressive approach to cleaning may be needed. It is extremely important you first check the settings are secure. Some pieces could be set with glue and should not be cleaned with any liquid as it could possibly loosen the setting. One of the main causes of dirty stones is hard water. This leaves a chalk like residue. Clean with a soft soap and distilled water. Use a soft paintbrush to clean, let dry and polish with a lint free soft cloth. A conservator specialist can help by advising which pieces are most vulnerable. He will advise you on how to care for your antique pieces and how to best store your collection.
STORING YOUR JEWELLERY Storage is particularly important to ensure your jewellery will last for years and can be passed down to future generations. Try to keep each piece stored separately. Precious stones can and will scratch each other if blended together. A stone such as an emerald are brittle and if bundled together with other pieces can be damaged. Traditional jewellery boxes are well designed to secure and support items when being stored.
When preparing boxes use acid-free tissue paper to pack and cushion your pieces. Cotton wool should be avoided as it may catch on the jewellery and damp air has been known to cause corrosion. Do not use coloured tissue paper as it can stain pearls, bone and ivory. To protect your silver items jewellery pouches, wraps, or silver protection cloth are the best for storing your pieces.
